No picture because I was working. I don’t think these were even sold in the US. It had new Washington plates on it.

DC or Washington state? DC means diplomatic plates (I saw a Renault Avantime in Times Square once, because it’s the same deal in NYC) so that’s no biggie but Washington state is something super rad.

And by super rad I mean boring for the rest of the world who gets these but super rad for the US and our love of forbidden automotive fruit.

I don't think they ever were. But I do think foreign delegates, and people her on a work via can bring their cars into the states. Could be a Canandain resident who is just working here.

Does that mean it would have to be registered in the US too?

In Victoria, BC on vacation right now. These old X-Trails were fucking awesome. Yes, they were Primeras in disguise, but with selectable AWD they seemed to hold their own off-road. The new ones are just a POS Rogue. Fuck you Nissan, you’re getting soft. First the Xterra, then the Pathfinder, and now the X-Trail? And yet the GT-R soldiers on as just something for everyone over at CarThrottle to have a circle-jerk over. Meanwhile the rest of your range gets awful CVTs and then Renault manages to make a whole line-up of normal cars which are both better and prettier than yours. Leave the US market and let Renault come back, or bring the IDx and get rid of the fucking awful Q50/Skyline and its robot steering. Goddamnit I really needed to rant ok I’m out good night.

I feel like it’s one of those vehicles that will never go away. I see 7-10 on my daily commute, and that’s a lot considering they haven’t sold the thing here for 10 years now.

Agreed. The old X-Trail was seen as quite a common and boring car in Europe, but they’re certainly more worthy than their replacement will ever be. Carthrottle’s community drives me nuts as well - the R35 is great but its constant hype annoys me over time.

Remember a while ago when Nissan was the main Japanese manufacturer of the big three to cater to enthusiasts after the 1990s? That’s not the case anymore. Nissan still have the …370Z? Not a bad car by any means, but it’s far behind today’s standards - same goes with most Infinitis.

I’ve heard today’s Renaults aren’t amazing (some of their engines are a big weedy) but in terms of design at least they’re doing pretty well. Nissan should take note since they’re losing their identity pretty quickly. Here’s hoping it gets better.

Nope, never sold in the US! They were sold up here in Canada though! They also had a weird-for-an-SUV dash where the gauges were all centered, Mini-style.

Yeah, the original CUVs were actually pretty worthy little machines, the RAV4, CRV, and X-Trail, since a lot of manufacturers felt it necessary for even these cute utes to have some offroad capability.

What I find a bit annoying about the R35 is it’s about to click over the ten year mark with little to no changes to the basic vehicle. Back in the ‘90s, they had the R32, R33, and R34 released over this length of time. It’s a both a sign that Nissan is caring less as well as the pointless loyalty of CT fans, although to their credit the damned thing is still pretty fast, if not pretty.

Yep, ‘90s Nissan was awesome, that’s why I keep waiting for them to make a come-back but it hasn’t happened. Really, none of the big Japanese makers have returned to their ‘90s form during the bubble economy where they made good cars but simultaneously fun and durable cars. Nowadays they’re basically plastic rental specials which are too laden with unnecessary technology yet lacking development where it coumts. Granted, this was what the Germans were doing a decade ago, but I digress.

Yeah, Renault engines were never one of their strongest points but hey, they’re French so you gotta give them points for design and style, which they have a lot more of than Nissan does. Van den Acker’s direction with the new Espace, Talisman, and Megane is simply stunning and I can’t wait to see how he translates it to the company’s SUVs as well.
